China's National People's Congress spokesman Lou Qinjian told reporters on Tuesday (March 4) that DeepSeek's progress reflects the growth of Chinese companies in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).
Lou responded to a question about China's progress in AI, saying the achievements of Deepseek's young team were commendable.
“Deepseek adheres to the open-source development approach and promotes the widespread use of AI technology worldwide, which helps spread Chinese wisdom to the world stage.” He said
“The growth of Deepseek’s companies demonstrates the innovation and comprehensiveness of China’s technology development.”
AI startup DeepSearch has garnered acclaim in China after shaking up the global tech industry by releasing an AI model that is cheaper than US rival OpenAI.
While governments in some countries, such as South Korea and Italy, have removed Deepseke’s chatbot from their app stores over privacy concerns, Deepseke has strong support in China, with local governments and tech companies using it in their systems.
Hangzhou-based DeepSeek is rushing to launch a successor to its R1 AI model, which it launched in January, Reuters reported last month.
